Eamonncarey got their new app design by running a design contest:
Design a super simple app to give people +1 or -1
Check out Eamonncarey's App design contest…
Entertainment & The Arts
The app allows users to give or take points from other users for specific actions. So you could give your girlfriend +1 cooking for making an amazing meal or give your best friend +1 lameness for telling a terrible joke. The main page of the app allows people to give their friends +1 or -1. The second page of the app is a simple profile page where people can see how many points they have on a leaderboard.
The application should be as simple as possible. I am a huge fan of Circle - http://discovercircle.com/, WTHR - http://wthr.co/ and Amen - https://getamen.com/ - all on iPhone. I particularly like the colour scheme of Circle and WTHR - however, I'm open to using a darker pallette if you think that works better. The design should be slightly spartan - keeping the user's focus on the functionality and simplicity of the app.
The app should be extremely simple as per the wireframes. It is really just two screens (potentially with very simple login/splash screen). Users land on the first page. There they have three options: To (a text box which they can use to enter a friends name from Facebook, an email address or Twitter handle) For (a text box where the user can specify what they are giving/taking +1/-1 for - for example 'cooking', 'funniness' etc) Give (+1 or -1) Once users input their choices into the text boxes, the page should show them a very simple 'thank you popup' and then refresh to allow them to give or take points again. There should be a profile/leaderboard button to allow users to move to the second screen. The second screen should contain basic profile info (name, photo, quick quote etc) and should also feature a leaderboard. The leaderboard should show how many points the user has accumulated against those of their friends. A dropdown bar will allow users to see leaderboard based on different topics (cooking funniness etc)
What to avoid
Like Circle and WTHR, I would rather not have menu bars at the top or bottom of the screen. I also do not want excessive 'back' buttons.
