hoptown got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a design for a new iPhone app exclusively for iOS 7.
Check out hoptown's App design contest…
This app allows users to create and manage lists. The user signs up using their Dropbox account and the lists are synchronized in the cloud. The lists are updated on any device that the user has this application installed. Their is a shopping list feature that allows the user to sort a list by completion status, category, or aisle. This is done by shaking the iOS device.
The app is only compatible with iOS 7. Therefore the design should not look like its made for previous iOS. Apple has changed the look of iOS by using a flatter style. Their guidelines can be found here: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40006556-CH66-SW1
Keep IT Simple
The app starts by displaying a blank screen and a button. When tapped, the user is taken to a Dropbox website (separate from this app) in order to sign or give permission for this app to use Dropbox. Main Screen (displays all the lists created by user) Once that is complete, the user is brought back to the main screen that now shows a navigation bar at top and toolbar at bottom. The screen displays all the lists created by the user except when the app is first launched and there are no lists. On the navigation bar there is a button labeled "New". Tapping this button is how the user gets started creating list. New List Screen: Once the New button is tapped, the user is taken to a screen that allows them to type a list name, select whether or not the list is active, select whether or not this is a shopping list, type a note, and choose a colored icon to represent the list (done through an iOS picker). Item Screen (displays all the items for a particular list) All the lists are displayed on the main screen in a table view. Once a list is created, a user can select a list and the next screen shows all the items on a list. Items are created by tapping a + button in the navigation bar. New Item Screen: Tapping that button takes the user to a screen that allows them to: type item name, type item description, type in a quantity, select whether or not the item is complete, and choose a category and aisle number for the item through an iOS picker. Information Screen: On the main screen that displays all the lists, there is a toolbar at the bottom. The toolbar has an information button. Tapping the information button takes the user to a screen that displays the status of their Dropbox through a broken chain if not connected, and a solid chain if connected. Also displayed is the user name, my website, a contact me (email) button, and a button labeled "Rate it", that will take the user to the App Store in order to rate the app. There's also a close button at the bottom that takes the user back to the main screen.
What to avoid
Bordered buttons, 3d, 2d artwork. Leaving too much space on screens. Any design that looks like its made for iOS 6 and before. A design that does not look good on all iPhone screens. There are two iPhone screen sizes.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. App design starts at MX$11,399.
